Sketch Day 2016

September 9, 2016

At the start of each year our graphic design students head out for our annual sketch day. We met today under cloudy skies at Assiniboine Park. By 11 am the sun came out to make for a beautiful day. The park offered a variety of locations: the Leo Mol Sculpture Garden, the English Garden and the zoo. We look forward to seeing the sketchbooks Monday morning.

Hely Schumann – 2015 Gillespie Award Winner

February 5, 2016

Graphic Design Advanced student Hely Schumann is this year’s Gillespie Award winner. Listen to Hely talk about her experience in our program in our new video.

BruceGilespie_Poster_Schumann2

Bruce Gillespie was an instructor at Red River College from 1989 until illness in 2007 left
him unable to continue teaching. Bruce left this mortal world in the spring of 2008 at the age of 57.

Over the course of his two decades at RRC, he crossed paths with hundreds of aspiring graphic designers, as a teacher, mentor, big brother and friend. In addition to teaching, Bruce is best remembered by most people for his encyclopedic knowledge of music, for his incredible album collection, and his own musical ability.

Application for the award is in the form of a poster that reflects on the marriage of music and art; collecting, giving, sharing, remembering and passion.

Previous winners are:
2014 Réanne Chamberland
2013 Steve Ramos
2012 Christian Gilbang
2011 Sam Giesbrecht
2010 Madison Zyluk
2009 Marie Hart
2008 Melissa Archer

Aaron Draplin Visits Our Studio

November 30, 2015

Draplin
The Manitoba Chapter of the GDC (Graphic Designers Canada) brought in well known US designer Aaron Draplin (http://www.draplin.com/). As part of his visit to Winnipeg our students bid on, and won, a studio visit from Aaron on Thursday November 5. He was very gracious with his time visiting with and answering questions from students. A very dynamic speaker with a great sense of humour, he shared stories and perspectives on design. As part of our winning bid, we also received 5 tickets for our students to attend the GDC lecture the following evening.
