Reach for the STAR: Strategic Transformation & Applied Research internal funding program

The Strategic Transformation & Applied Research (STAR) fund is a new internal funding program at Red River College. An evolution from previous internal funding (PIF and CARD), the new fund aims to support a broad range of activities at the College with emphasis on interdisciplinary and multi-department projects.

Proposals must clearly demonstrate innovation, must be unique and/or have elements of strategic transformation.

There are three main categories for applications:

  1. Academic Innovation
  2. Applied Research
  3. College-wide Improvements

Applications now open for CIRA’s Community Investment Program

The Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) has opened up applications for the next round of the Community Investment Program.

The application period is open until 2:00 p.m. on February 28, 2019. Grants are open to researchers at universities and colleges working on projects that contribute to building a better online Canada, as well as to non-profits and registered charities. Grants are available up to $100,000, with one grant available up to $250,000.

This year, CIRA is focused on the following key funding areas:

  • Infrastructure: Developing connectivity services for regional, rural, remote and/or underserved communities
  • Access: Providing individuals and communities with the ability to connect to the internet
  • Digital Literacy: Enhancing Canadians’ knowledge and skills to use the internet effectively and safely
  • Engagement: Research and knowledge-sharing activities that broaden public understanding and participation in Internet policy development and governance and cybersecurity
  • Services: Building online apps and platforms that address social, economic and/or environmental needs

Funding opportunity available to teach or conduct research in Latin America and the Caribbean

Application for the Faculty Mobility Program is now open for the 2019-2020 academic year.

Available through the Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP), the Faculty Mobility Program provides Canadian faculty from post-secondary institutions with short-term opportunities to teach or conduct research in eligible countries (CARICOM countries, Central America, Latin America, Mexico). It is available through the Government of Canada International Scholarships program.

The program aims to increase the number of institutional collaborations and student exchange agreements between Canadian and foreign institutions eligible under ELAP. These agreements are created between colleges, technical or vocational institutions and universities in Canada, Latin Americas and the Caribbean.

Did You Know? We’ve Used Bio-Fuel to Reduce College Waste

With the April 4 College Applied Research Development Fund (CARD) application deadline fast approaching, here is the third installment of our “Did You Know” series to highlight some of the projects made possible with CARD support.
Mike Myrowich initiated a CARD-funded bio-fuel project in 2010 for the purpose of reducing waste produced by the College.
The project converted hundreds of litres of cooking oil into a useable fuel source regularly. Read More →

New Federal Green Infrastructure Funding Available

Natural Resources Canada have launched three new programs and are now accepting proposals. 
Smart Grid Program
The Smart Grid Programs request for proposals is now open. To receive the Applicant Guide and Proposal Template, please visit the NRC website HERE.
Before you begin the process, please check the section on program eligibility in the Guide. The deadline to submit your proposal is March 4, 2018 at 23:59 EST.
Energy Efficient Buildings Research, Development and Demonstration
The Energy Efficient Buildings RD&D program aims to increase energy efficiency and address climate change by improving how our homes and buildings are designed, renovated, and constructed.

Emerging Renewable Power Program
The Emerging Renewable Power Program (ERPP) was launched this January, 2018. The Program provides up to $200 million to expand the portfolio of commercially viable renewable energy sources available to provinces and territories as they work to reduce GHG emissions from their electricity sectors.
The program will provide up front support for renewable power projects using technologies that have not yet been commercially established in Canada at the utility scale, such as geothermal, tidal, and offshore wind.

CIRA’s Community Investment Program (CIP) provides funding for projects that help build a better online Canada.
Currently in its fifth year, the program has awarded more than $4 million to over 102 diverse projects in four key areas: infrastructure, online services, research and digital literacy.
