Jean Burrows Scholarship  – Erin Conway : Jean Burrows was the Nursing Dept. Chair from ErinConway,141974 to 1998 and upon her retirement this scholarship was created for a 1st year student recognizing their outstanding academic achievement.

This award was established from students who in 1997, each student as part of their tuition fees contributed to this endowment fund.  In 2001, a portion of this money was dedicated to the creation of these awards.  The class of 2002 also made a sizeable contribution from their own fundraising efforts.

This award is for deserving students who have gone above and beyond in support and leadership of their peers.  Established by the awards committee, with nominations from faculty and peers.

The nursing program and Community Clinical Course for Perinatal & Growing Family Health, has been in partnership with Healthy Start for Mom and Me for the past several years. Knox Church Healthy Start is run by Healthy Child Manitoba and has been a clinical site for 3rd year students. The Healthy Start Program is geared towards Health Promotion of new immigrant women and babies. Participants meet each week and attendance is approximately 70-90 adults at a time. They have over 17 translators on site for each of their language groups to provide interpretation of the health messages provided. The site sets up a table of give-away items including warm clothing, children’s books and toys, which is very popular.

In the spirit of community service, the RRC Nursing faculty conducted a warm clothing drive to support the participants of the Knox Church Healthy Start program. The faculty and staff brought forward an amazing collection of cozy items to donate. The generosity of the nursing department overwhelmed the staff at the program. The faculty received a lovely thank you note from Know HealthyStart in response to the generous donations.

The faculty hope to have a second drive in February when the students return again. The plan is to support “I Love to Read Month”. We will be collecting new and used children’s books. Anyone with a book they would like to donate contact Dianne Brown and/or Luanne Hill. A third drive in April will be to collect clothing that is for warmer weather.

As part of their clinical experience, nursing students attend Knox Church Healthy Start for a experiential day each term and they will plan for a second occasion for a student led Health Fair a month later. On the first visit, students focus on assessing the learning needs and conversing with participants and staff. The second visit is a Health Fair Day where the students hold presentations focusing on a Health topic chosen by agency staff. Door prizes are drawn at the end to provide added incentive for participating at the Health Fair.

RRC BN Gold Medal Winner

The prestigious award for highest academic achievement in the BN program at Red River College was handed out at the recent College Graduation. Also pictured    is Ashley receiving her rose at the pinning ceremony.

The second graduating class of the Red River College Baccalaureate Nursing (BN) Program were presented with their Nursing Pins at the Caboto Centre on August 22nd, 2014. The pins marked transition from education and preparation into the profession of Nursing.

Convocation ceremonies for the BN Program will be held with the RRC Winter Convocation ceremony, Feb 10th, 2015 at the Centennial Concert Hall.

 

Credentials. What’s behind your name?

This can be confusing for many graduates. For the graduates of the Civil Engineering Technology department, there many reasons for it. The Construction Management degree students actually did not have an official set of letters specified for their degree. The Civil Engineering Technology diploma students have a department acronym the same as their main credentialing association’s credential, CET.

Construction Management Graduates

It became official this week that your credential upon graduation is BTech (Const Mgmt). You are able to add that to your resume, business cards, email signoff, and fancy official letterhead once you have your parchment. For those unaware, the Construction Management degree program is a Bachelor of technology program with a major focus on construction management, hence, the credential, BTech.

Civil Engineering Technology Graduates (3 year diploma programs)

Many have mistaken CET to represent graduation from the Civil Eng Tech department but, in fact, that is not correct. CET represents recognition and membership to the Certified Technologist and Technicians Association of Manitoba (CTTAM). Graduates are granted the credential of CET after meeting the criteria set by CTTAM. The criteria includes CTTAM membership, graduation from an accredited post-secondary program, successfully completing an ethics exam, and having a minimum of two years of work experience in your field of study and at a technologist level. The new CNC Laser and CNC Plasma cutter are being used by our Industrial Arts students. They are etching, engraving and cutting a variety of designs in wood, metal, plastic and foam core materials.

Student Work Experience: Jingjing Wang

My name is Jingjing Wang and I worked as a Plant Pathology and Cereal Breeding Assistant at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Brandon Research center for my summer Co-op term. I was assigned to a project looking for barley strains with resistant genes using RT-PCR data. During my work term, I received training in WHMIS, DNA extraction, operating RT-PCR instrumentation and lab sterilization practices.

My daily work was to perform DNA extractions of various barleys and to screen the resulting genetic material by running it through the RT-PCR. Subsequently, I organized the results and made a conclusion for each run.

In addition to working in the lab, I also did field work. This meant that I had a really good combination of theoretical and practical experience, which gave me a better understanding of my work in the molecular lab. At the research center, I not only picked up technical skills, but also professional skills. I learned how to work with my group efficiently and how to map out tasks.

All in all, the Brandon Research Station is a really nice place to work. I am thankful to all the Chemical and Biosciences Technology instructors at Red River College for helping me learn the skills I needed to get this position.
