Flood Mapper Project

September 11, 2012

The Flood Mapper Project was requested by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) for the purpose of creating a proof of concept application that could be used to show the value of collecting LIDAR data. The Flood Mapper program itself was used to analyze the different watershed areas in Manitoba along the Red River basin.

The team worked on a graphical 3D project which could:
• visually display the low points in a landscape with a polygon overlay
• estimate the amount of water that could be held in a particular area depending on the elevation of the water
• draw sandbag lines and estimate the number of sandbags required for a given area

The IISD was sufficiently satisfied with the project to hire one of the team members for the summer to further develop and polish some of the existing Flood Mapper functionality.
