Design instructor earns Pinnacle Award for furniture series commissioned by Palliser

January 28, 2016

James CulletonOur congratulations to Continuing Education instructor James Culleton, who recently received a prestigious Pinnacle Award from the American Society of Furniture designers.

Culleton, who teaches Graphic Design and Manual Writing and Design classes at RRC, was one of 16 designers from across North America to be recognized by the organization. He won in the motion upholstery category for the M1 series he designed for Palliser Furniture, where he’s served as design director for almost 15 years.

Culleton first got involved with RRC through his position at Palliser, launching an ongoing partnership with the College’s Residential Decorating program by enlisting students to design a trade show booth for Palliser.

He says the most interesting part of his job as an instructor is teaching students to problem-solve visually, noting he’s fascinated by the range of people who take evening classes at RRC.

Learn more about Culleton’s experiences as an instructor, and find out where in Winnipeg you can see some of his more notable designs.

Recognition of Prior Learning grad fosters adult education and literacy in N.W.T.

November 12, 2015

Karen Willy, Recognition of Prior Learning

Karen Willy describes herself as a life-long learner. And she’s helping others do the same.

A Yellowknife resident, Willy is the most recent graduate of Red River College’s Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Practitioner program, available through the School of Continuing Education.

She serves as Coordinator for Adult Literacy and Basic Education for the Government of the Northwest Territories’ Department of Education, Culture and Employment, where she’s responsible for the Adult Recognition Model, designed for those enrolled in adult basic education.

The program gives participants the opportunity to complete academic credits for core courses, and to receive recognition for the optional credits they need for a senior secondary school diploma.

“You need to understand that adults come with their own experiences, their own knowledge, and their own learning that we need to honour,” Willy says of her clients.
