The Roblin Centre Campus will be closed on Tuesday October 11th.

This closure is the result of water-main work on William Street adjacent to the campus. Replacement to the water-main will result in water being shut-off to the campus for the day. As a result, for safety reasons, we are forced to cancel classes for the day. This includes all evening classes on this campus.

The water shut off is to only affect the Roblin Centre and should have no impact on other RRC properties within the Exchange District.

The Adam Beach Film Institute (ABFI) and Red River College’s Corporate Solutions are pleased to annouce that 16 more Indigenous storytellers received their Certificates of Achievement on June 9, 2016.

ABFI and Corporate Solutions have partnered with each other to deliver culturally appropriate training in Manitoba’s film industry. This partnership, currently in its second year, is designed to give a voice to young Indigenous Winnipeggers.

By developing their skills in film and television, particularly during this Year of Reconciliation, these students will be better prepared for careers in the ever-growing Manitoba Film Industry. Their unique viewpoints are vital to Canada’s future prosperity.

ABFI is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to removing barriers so that young Indigenous Canadians can develop the skills and abilities to tell their stories.

After an intense day of shooting, editing and judging, two Red River College photography students brought home medals from last month’s Skills Manitoba Competition.

The event marked the end of a year’s worth of hard work for the students, who next week will graduate from RRC’s Professional Photography program. Both, however, came to the College with an entirely different career path in mind.

KJ Rocan and Colby Spence — who won gold and bronze medals, respectively — both planned to study Business Administration at RRC. Spence even completed the first year of the program, but after realizing they could combine their artistic pursuits with the fundamentals of business, both students switched their focus to Photography.

Rocan (shown above, with RRC President Paul Vogt), has been taking pictures since she was two, and was sold on the program after touring the College’s photography studio during an Open House event.

“We walked into the photography [lab], and it was like, ‘OK, well, I’m going here now,” she says.

Spence first heard about the program when RRC recruiters visited his high school. He’d been pursuing photography as a hobby for years — gaining an understanding of its principals and amassing a decent gear kit — so when it came time to choose a post-secondary path, he opted to see if he could further develop his skill set while making the pastime lucrative. The lights were out at the Gilbert Park Boys and Girls Club that frosty winter night. No surprise – it was well past closing. Jenny Isla wasn’t sure why her boyfriend Cole Berens had pulled them away from his cousin’s birthday party to visit the youth centre where they both worked. “I need to find some papers,” sounded a bit suspect.

Isla hurried towards the door, stepping ahead of Berens. When she looked back, he was down on one knee, her mother’s ring held up in his hands.

“I cried,” Isla laughs, recalling the proposal in front of the club that means so much to her and Berens, and to hundreds of youth in Winnipeg’s North End.

Isla and Berens (both graduates of Red River College’s Youth Recreation Activity Worker Program, 2014 and 2015, respectively) first met at the Boys and Girls Club of Winnipeg when they were members and teen mentors, supporting the 35-year old organization’s goal of empowering youth through free activities that foster healthy living, personal growth and social development.

Having grown up in the North End, Isla had always wanted to work with youth. “I always imagined myself up for a challenge and wanted to be with at-risk youth and children,” she says. Alisher Kabildjanov, 2016 PMI Award winner

Although Alisher Kabildjanov’s combination of intellect, creativity and work ethic make him a deserving choice for Red River College’s joint award with the Project Management Institute (PMI) for outstanding student work, he’s quick to shine the spotlight on others when talking about his experience in RRC’s Project Management program.

“If I had to pick just one highlight from the program, I’d say it was the teamwork,” says Alisher. “The relationship between the teams who were working on projects, they were the best part. It’s how I realized that project management is not about your unique skills at the end of the day – it’s your team’s strengths and [your] ability to work with teams.”

When Alisher arrived in Winnipeg 12 years ago, he’d already spent years working with teams. After earning a Bachelor’s degree in English philosophy from Karshi State University, he embraced the “uncertainty and risk, but also the unique results” of projects for both the United Nations Development Program and the European Union’s Technical Assistance Program in project management and business analyst roles.

Continuing Education instructor Jeremy Torrie is running a gauntlet every filmmaker knows. He’s pulling together the fine cut of Juliana & The Medicine Fish, his adaptation of Jake Macdonald’s beloved bestselling young adult novel.

There are thousands of takes from this past autumn’s work with stars Adam Beach and Emma Tremblay to comb through, and agonizing choices to face. Does he use the shot where Beach’s dialogue was note-perfect, or the one with the best lighting? When should he cut from one shot to the next? Is there a way to reclaim the out-of-focus footage?

“Those are the compromises you make,” says Torrie of the labour of love that leans on his talents as writer, director and producer. “Films are not perfect – they’re a microcosm of anything and everything happening during prep, production, post-production… Most people don’t care about the behind-the-scenes stuff, but those are the things you have to deal with in the industry and hopefully come out on top of.”

It’s that sort of industry insider insight — coupled with storytelling craft — that Torrie imparts to students taking Red River College’s AV Short Video Production course, and to those enrolled in the three-month Enhanced Filmmaking Skills & Techniques certificate course, offered in partnership with the Adam Beach Film Institute.

The fusion of art and business savvy is critical for young filmmakers hoping to go on to full careers, says Torrie, whose past credits include the 2003 TV movie Cowboys and Indians: The J.J. Harper Story and the 2008 documentary Spirit of Stolen Sisters.

“Just because it’s artistic doesn’t mean it’s not a business,” he explains. “That’s what someone like me can bring to the table: to allow for the appreciation it’s not just a story – the story is absolutely important – but beyond that, there is an entire industry.”

“When you’re able to bring real business experience to a teaching setting, you’re going to set people up for success.”
