The First Annual Jerk Chicken Cook-off was a resounding success!

WINNIPEG, MB – Media are invited to attend a photo opportunity that will celebrate the success of the first annual, Chef vs. Chief Jerk Chicken Cook-off, that was held on September 9th, that pitted Red River College’s Chef Tim Appleton against Winnipeg Police Chief Devon Clunis, in a culinary battle to raise awareness and money for the Red River College Youth in Care Bursary and the Winnipeg Police Service Endowment Fund.

This first annual event attracted more than 500 people to Winnipeg’s Exchange District and helped raise $3600.00 in support of both worthwhile initiatives. Chief Clunis won the day after being awarded the Judges Choice Award and the Peoples Choice Award!

Red River College President & CEO, Paul Vogt will make the ceremonial cheque presentation today to Winnipeg Police Chief Devon Clunis and RRC Culinary Arts Instructor, Chef Tim Appleton.

WINNIPEG, MB – Tonight, from 5:30pm to 10:00pm, Creative Communication students will fill the Roblin Centre Atrium (160 Princess Street), to show off their documentaries, read from their books, and talk about their newly founded non-profits as part of the IPP expo: the first event to feature IPPs in an interactive and creative manner. The IPPe is free and open to the public.

The event, created and run by Creative Communications student Brina Gervais, gives the public a chance to meet the up-and-comers in the communications industry, including many students who’ve already gained city-wide attention for their incredible and community-enriching year-long projects. Now, they will be available for meet-and-greets and open conversations as they show off their projects once more.

The IPPe will feature:

·      38 IPPs

·      A new presenter every 15 minutes

·      16 tables in the Atrium throughout the night

·      A live broadcast booth from Red River Radio’s morning show hosts

·      Interactive booths

With over 200 full-time, part-time and apprenticeship options, deciding which Red River College program to pursue can be a major achievement in itself.

To help future students make that important choice, the College will open its doors to the community on February 18 and 19 during Open House 2015.

The event will showcase RRC’s wide range of career-related training options and the hands-on approach to learning that has helped our students achieve a 96% employment rate after graduation.

Attendees can speak directly to current students and instructors about their programs, and get a sense of what life at RRC is like by touring our classrooms, labs and other facilities — including the new Paterson GlobalFoods Institute, home of the College’s School of Hospitality and Culinary Arts, as well as its first student residence. Admissions experts will also be on hand to answer questions about the application process, and to assist with the completion of application forms and give advice about career exploration.

Tonight, the Medical Officer of Health, Manitoba Health and the Office of Drinking Water issued a precautionary localized boil water advisory for some parts of the City of Winnipeg. In an abundance of caution, the City of Winnipeg has decided to proactively issue a precautionary boil water advisory for the entire City of Winnipeg.

The precautionary advisory was issued because test results from Monday, January 26, 2015, tested positive for the presence of E. coli in City’s water supply.

Until further notice, staff and students should use boiled tap water that has cooled, or bottled water for:

• drinking and making ice
• preparing beverages, including infant formula
• preparing food
• brushing teeth

This advisory will affect the following services at all of Red River College’s Winnipeg Campuses.

• Food services will be limited at all sites and staff and students are encouraged to bring their own hot beverages tomorrow morning.
• Staff at PGI will provide bottled water for residents and will provide a limited breakfast to the residents tomorrow morning.
• Classes at PGI will not be affected but food services will be limited for the day.
• As a precaution Jane’s will be closed on Wednesday, January 28, 2015.
• Water fountains and bottle filling stations will be turned off and unavailable.

Bottled water will also be available for purchase from food services, The Ox, Mercantile, and College vending machines.

Staff and students are encouraged to read the Precautionary Measures During a Boil Water Advisory, and are also encouraged to advise friends and family who may not be aware of this advisory.

The City of Winnipeg will be providing regular updates at www.winnipeg.ca and will be re-evaluating the water quality tomorrow afternoon. Once the City of Winnipeg has provided an update, we will provide further direction for all College staff and students.

RRC to host Global Cardboard Challenge

WINNIPEG, MB – Today, Red River College’s Early Childhood Education (ECE) program in partnership with IKEA Winnipeg join with children’s organizations around the world for the 2014 Global Cardboard Challenge — an event that encourages kids to harness their imagination and creativity while turning everyday household items into treasures.

Inspired by Caine’s Arcade — a short film about a young boy whose cardboard creations triggered a worldwide movement celebrating the “power of play” — the event is organized globally by the Imagination Foundation, a not-for-profit dedicated to raising the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs.

“IKEA is a key corporate partner for this community event,” says Louise Gordon, dean, Health Sciences and Community Services, Red River College. “Their willingness to provide supplies, staff, and expertise is vital to making this cardboard challenge a reality and Red River College is grateful for their support.”

Red River College will host 60 children participating from four local childcare centres, one Aboriginal Head Start program, and one Winnipeg school. Each group of children will be paired with a team of adults comprised of one IKEA staff member and two second-year ECE students.

WINNIPEG, MB – Red River College (RRC) in partnership with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA) came together to develop a mental health strategy for the college community titled Healthy Minds Healthy College that includes launch of an online resource called Mind it!

The Healthy Minds Healthy College strategy is comprehensive and systemically based, recognizing everyone has a role to play in the positive mental health of the college community. The goal was to cultivate an environment of support that provides a sense of well-being, belonging, connectedness, and positive mental health for all students, faculty and staff.

“The advisory committee that came together in support of this initiative is to be commended,” said Laureen Janzen, Coordinator, Counselling and Accessibility Services (Chair), Red River College. “The vision of Healthy Minds Healthy College was to offer evidence-informed options to respond to the mental, social, psychological and spiritual needs of students, faculty and staff and the committee has exceeded those expectations.”
