A message to Red River College staff from Dr. Christine Watson, Interim President & CEO
As many of you are aware from media reports, the Province of Manitoba has announced that it is meeting with union officials to discuss ways to reduce government spending for public sector entities including post-secondary education, Crown Corporations and other non-profit organizations.
Our Executive Team was notified of this today in a conference call with government officials and other public sector organizations. As the media have reported, one of the options on the table is implementing a reduced work week for public sector workers in order to decrease costs and avoid layoffs.
We are continuing to discuss our options with government and will be sitting down with representatives from the Manitoba Government and General Employees’ Union as soon as possible.
We are in unprecedented times but our core mission remains the same – to support our students in their studies, to produce job-ready graduates for industry and our community, and to play a key role in rebuilding our economy when this pandemic recedes.
The Executive and Senior Leadership Team is focused on supporting faculty and staff in delivering our mission while also ensuring all those in the RRC community stay safe. We are extremely proud of our efforts to go mobile and bring in alternative delivery of our programs and services. We know how hard everybody has been working to rise to the occasion and we are very thankful to have such a creative and dedicated staff.
We are going to work closely with RRC managers and our union leadership to reduce costs in the most sustainable way possible. We want to lessen the impact on people – our colleagues, co-workers and friends – and ensure our College continues to thrive as we deal with the challenges before us.
We will update you as soon as more information becomes available. Please stay safe.
