As a BIT student, learn the required combination of technical, business and soft skills to land a rewarding career within the IT profession. You will gain an understanding of how different areas of information technology work together by learning application development, database management, network management and web development.
Over the past 50 years, with the helpful guidance of our advisory committee, our program has grown and evolved to become the program organizations turn to for their IT recruiting needs. The advisory committee is made up of more than 20 active industry members who give us insight into the role of an IT professional in Winnipeg and meet twice per year. The result is a curriculum designed to provide you with up-to-date and relevant skills that meet the needs of industry, both locally and worldwide.
For information about program requirements, courses, employment potential and more, see the Program Catalogue.
This program is accredited by the Canadian Information Processing Society’s (CIPS) Information Systems and Technology Accreditation Council. Members of the council accreditation committee visit Red River College Polytechnic once every three years to review the program and its curriculum. The BIT program is accredited by CIPS since 2000.

As part of this program’s work experience term, students may have the opportunity to complete an industry project at the ACE Project Space, a collaborative space where education and innovation collide. Students get the chance to work on projects with real companies and clients to bring unique ideas to life.
Our labs are used for hands-on, interactive learning for computer networking and industry projects. We have a number of lab spaces available to students studying in the BIT program. To find out more, see our labs.
Our team of faculty and staff bring with them a wealth of experience and knowledge to help you succeed as a student of the BIT program.
As a BIT student, you have the opportunity to join student groups dedicated to your program. To learn more, see the Student Groups page.
Since 1968, our program has graduated more than 3,600 students. See the History of the BIT program.
It all started in 1968. Red River College Polytechnic launched a brand new program: Computer Analyst/Programmer (CAP). In the 50+ years since, CAP has seen multiple evolutions, existing as Information Systems Technology (IST) for some time, and most recently it is known as Business Information Technology (BIT). The BIT program exists today as a 28-month program, providing a solid technical foundation in information technology and related business courses. The program is complemented by practical applied training through an industry project or paid co-op work term.
In the past 50+ years, many thousands of students have come and gone. Today, they are developers, network administrators, business analysts, vice presidents (VPs), chief information officers (CIOs) and presidents! They are working in all sectors of business, in both the private and public sectors, including Manitoba Blue Cross, Wawanesa, BIT Space Development, Informanix, Great-West Life, among others – and many involved with the ICTAM association.
Our grads are working throughout the city and across the world. They have created your websites, your databases and your network systems. They have also worked their way from being programmers to presidents of their companies. They have gone from being students in the classroom to making their own presentations to thousands of people. The students have made this program what it is today and we are incredibly proud to see the contributions to information technology each graduate has made.
From the Applied Computer Education (ACE) department at Red River College Polytechnic, thank you to all of our sponsors. You always have been supporters of the BIT, IST or CAP program and a part of this department.
Additionally, many congratulations to Stu and Heather Charles, both Distinguished Graduates, who were honored at our 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner in November 2018. Read their story on RRC Polytech blog.
