


Foundations of Social Innovation introduces learners to how new ideas become real-world solutions to social challenges. This course explores how communities mobilize change through values-driven, community-based initiatives that address social inequality and respond to social needs.
Students will examine social ideas in action – from early concepts to implementation – and gain insight into the principles, strategies, and approaches used in social innovation today. Through case studies and examples, learners will explore a wide range of social enterprises and community development organizations in Canada and around the world.
This course also provides a strong foundation for those considering further study or work in the social impact sector, helping learners understand the distinct pathways of community development and social entrepreneurship.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to identify opportunities within the social innovation ecosystem and use this foundational knowledge to support further learning or career exploration in social impact fields.
As a Foundations of Social Innovation student, you are interested in creating social change. You want to right wrongs and be an ally to people who are facing barriers to healthy, self-determined lives. You might be in social justice clubs, volunteering or making your school or community better for all. As a successful professional, your work is guided by passion, empathy, creativity and flexibility.
