Manitoba is composed of people from diverse cultural backgrounds, including different national or ethnic affiliations, language, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical and cognitive abilities, spiritual beliefs, marital/parental status.

The Academic Success Centre provides diversity training to students at Red River College to support the development of their intercultural competence and enhance their understanding and respect for gender and sexual diversity.

Intercultural Training Program

Instructors can request in-classroom workshops for their students throughout the year. A suite of intercultural workshops is available to assist students in developing the cultural awareness and skills needed to study and work successfully in today’s global environment.

Topics include:

  • Managing Cross-Cultural Differences
  • Communication across Cultures
  • Working in Diverse Teams

LGBTT* Initiative

Gender and sexual diversity in-classroom workshops are also available to support students in understanding the complexity of the gender and sexual diversity spectrum and develop inclusive strategies for respectful and affirming communication.

Some of the learning components included in the workshops are:

  • Intersections between gender, gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation
  • Inclusive and respectful LGBTT* terminology
  • Strategies for responding to disclosure

Diversity Awareness Online Courses

In addition to the in-classroom workshops, instructors can also access two Diversity Awareness Courses in LEARN:

  • Cultural Diversity Awareness Course
  • Gender and Sexual Diversity Awareness Course.

These courses feature 50-minute modules, with video lectures, testimonies, learning activities, and accompanying resources. These online materials can be made available to student cohorts, and they can contribute to supporting diversity and intercultural learning outcomes in academic programs and courses.

In-class short sessions to introduce the courses to the students, as well as throughout the term to support their learning journey can also be scheduled at the request of instructors.
