Program Overview

The Academic English Program for University and College Entrance can help you obtain the English language requirements for entrance to academic programs at a college or university.

You’ll receive a cultural orientation to Canada and information about college or university and how to apply for admission.

Program Requirements

Permanent Resident

Because this program is funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, it is available only to those eligible for language training in Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada programs.

Equipment

A computer with a webcam, internet access, plus a good-quality headset and microphone.

English Level

Students need a minimum English level of CLB 7 in each skill area on an Adult ESL Student Progress Report or a minimum of 7 in each skill area on a CLB Placement Test.

Referral

New students must be referred from WELARC.

Fees

There is a one-time fee of $35 for a student identification card, plus fees for materials and books.

Note: Programs and classes only run if a minimum number of students register.

Selection Process

The Chair and program instructor(s) will review the applications and make selections based on, specifically, the applicants’ language proficiency, educational background, career plan, personal statement and, where applicable, instructor recommendation. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

The Chair and program instructor(s) will have final say in determining which applicants are successful. In selection, the program strives to achieve a balance between external students (WELARC referrals) and internal students (Centre for Newcomer Integration students).
