The "Emergency Scam" in Canada – Protect Yourself and Your Family

Phone scams and online scams have become very common all over the world. The people who commit these crimes try to trick others into providing their personal information and then they use this information to steal their victim’s identity or money. Many times this is done through Facebook or other similar online chat forums around the world because these are places where many people post personal information. Even though it is common problem, and we hear about it often, it is still easy to get fooled. It can happen to anyone!
One scam being talked about among LTC students is known as the “Emergency Scam”. It is a well known scam in some Asian countries and is making its way to Canada. The Winnipeg Police Commercial Crime Unit is aware of this scam, as well as many others, and they are willing to help however possible. One way is to help us learn more about scams and how to prevent them.

Folklorama 2014 Kick-Off

The Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries host Folklorama every year in Winnipeg. The Folklorama Kick-Off is a free event held at the Scotiabank Stage at The Forks on Saturday, July 26 from 4:00 pm to 11:00 pm. It offers fun for the whole family, including the MTS Marketplace, interactive children’s activities and cultural demonstrations. The mainstage show, featuring local and international performing groups, starts at 7:00 pm. The evening will be capped off with a spectacular fireworks display at 10:45 pm.

LINKS Seminars for Immigrant and International Students

RRC’s Diversity & Immigrant Student Support department will be offering a LINKS (Learning Interculturally: Networks, Knowledge & Strategies) Seminar. This is a 1-day orientation for immigrant students (permanent residents and citizens born abroad) and international (study visa) students.
In this seminar, you will learn about:

  • Knowledge of the Canadian College environment, culture and supports
  • Networking with other students, and College support staff
  • Mindset and strategies that can contribute to student success
  • Sense of comfort and connection to the College community
  • A personal plan for successful educational, social and cultural integration on and off campus

This year, these seminars will take place on the following dates:

  • August 26, 2014 – LINKS Seminar for Immigrant Students (Additional session may be held on August 25th, if necessary.)
  • August 27, 2014 – LINKS Seminar for International Students
  • August 28, 2014 – LINKS Seminar for International Students
  • January 3, 2015 – LINKS Seminar for Immigrant and International Students
  • April 28, 2015 (tentative) – LINKS Seminar for Immigrant and International Students

After participating in these seminars, immigrant and international students are better prepared to integrate more fully into academic and community life at the College, and to succeed in their programs.
All immigrant and international students starting a new program at Red River College are strongly encouraged to participate. Invitations to register online for the Fall Seminars will begin in early July.

More Volunteer Opportunities!

Do you enjoy working with children? Volunteer for two days of fun at the Cuba Va! Folklorama Pavilion. Volunteers are needed as meal servers, face painters, escorts, and more! Dates are Sunday, August 10 and Saturday, August 16; from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm. The Cuba Va! The Manitoba Marathon is seeking volunteers for their Signage Crew, Green Team and to act as Court Marshals for their upcoming event. The marathon takes place on June 15th and volunteers must have a good work ethic, work well in teams, execute directions well, and have a positive attitude. For more information, please click here.

Home Ownership Workshop

New Journey Housing has a few spaces available for the Home Ownership Workshop. It will be held at New Journey Housing, which is located on the 3rd floor of Portage Place. (Go up the escalators near the food court.)
Date: June 14th
Time 1:00 – 3:30 pm. 
If you need parking, please try to book it until 4:00 pm just in case we go over time!

  • basics about buying a home
  • where and how to get a mortgage

Manitoba Student Aid – Information Session for Immigrants

The University of Winnipeg Global Welcome Centre and the Red River College Diversity and Immigrant Student Support Department are pleased to offer an information session on Manitoba Student Aid. This session is for Manitoba immigrants (Permanent Residents, Refugee-claimants, and Canadian Citizens) who are planning to attend Post-Secondary Academic programs during the 2014-2015 Academic Year.
When: 4:00-5:30 pm, June 23, 2014
Where: Great West Life Lecture Theatre, Roblin Centre, Red River College (A104-160 Princess Street, Winnipeg)
