The Winnipeg Fringe  is a theatre festival that takes place from July 17-28. During the festival, Winnipeggers attend theatre productions, watch live musical performances in Old Market Square and enjoy other activities such as shopping at the outdoor market.

The festival relies on the help of more than 800 volunteers to make the festival a success! Volunteers assist guests and performers, making sure everyone has an enjoyable Fringe experience. Teams of volunteers sell tickets and usher for performances at 30 venues located in the Exchange District and downtown Winnipeg; help the youngest Fringers with games and activities at Kids Fringe; assist patrons and answer questions at the Info Tent in Old Market Square plus several other opportunities.

Happy May Long! This is a friendly reminder that there will be no classes on Monday, May 20th as it’s the Victoria Day national holiday.

Victoria Day is a Canadian statutory holiday celebrated on the Monday before May 25th. It honours Queen Victoria’s birthday.

To celebrate the long weekend, some Winnipeggers go out of town to go camping. Others spend time in the city, enjoying some fresh air at one of Winnipeg’s many parks.

About this Event

If you walk or drive around town this Saturday and Sunday, you might notice that there are many items on the curb in front of people’s houses and apartments. That’s because this weekend is a Giveaway Weekend in Winnipeg. It’s a great time to get rid of some household items that you no longer use or to browse the curbs for some gently used finds.

Tips if you are giving away items:

• Place unwanted household items at the curb on your front street.
• Label each item with a FREE sticker or sign.
• Store items out of sight that you do not want to give away.
• Remove leftover items from the curb by dusk on Sunday.
• Do not put out any items that may be infected with bedbugs.

Tips if you are looking for items:

• Take only the items at the curb marked “FREE.”
• Check all items closely to ensure they are safe and in good condition before you put them in your vehicle or bring them into your home.
• Don’t walk or drive on private lawns or gardens.

***Please note that Friday, February 1^st is a PD day for instructors. Classes are cancelled for students, so this is a great opportunity for students to meet new people, try something new and practice their English outside of class.

All students are invited to join the Student Support team for a fun-filled evening at the Manitoba Museum. There will be guides on-hand to provide information to students as well as a place for students to mingle and have some light refreshments and snacks.

For this edition of the Student Spotlight, we will not be highlighting the work of an individual student. Instead, we want to focus on a group of students (and their wonderful instructor) who have truly embraced the spirit of giving and worked tirelessly to bring holiday cheer to Winnipeg families.

In early November, Kim Mann’s class decided that they would like to help other students who might need some cheer during the holidays. Knowing that many LTC students request hampers from the Christmas Cheer Board, they decided to partner with this organization. As a group, they set a goal of collecting enough food, money and gifts to make 6 hampers.

During the month of November, the students worked with their instructor to promote the food drive while learning new English skills by completing real-world tasks. Below, Kim shares just a few examples of the work that her students completed:

• They created posters to hang up in the college. This was a great activity because they had to negotiate with classmates regarding the necessary information that should be included on their posters.

• They sold crocheted hats for a minimum donation of $1. This activity gave students the opportunity to share information about the food drive with other students. The students loved this activity because they could communicate with other students.

• At the beginning of the food drive, students had to create presentations to inform other students about the event. They each visited 5 classes to present their information.

• They attended presentation delivered by students in the Community Economic Development program at RRC to learn about how they ran their food drive. This sparked great conversation and idea sharing amongst the students.

By the end of November, the class not only met, but surpassed their goal and were able to raise enough money and food items to make 7 food hampers. Along with the hampers, they donated 2 boxes of toys and stocking stuffers, $115, and 10 boxes of extra donations that the Christmas Cheer Board will be able to use to complete hampers that they are working on. The class delivered the donations to the Cheer Board on Friday, December 7^th.

By participating in this activity, students learned valuable lessons in teamwork, language and Canadian culture. Below, the students share some feedback about their experience:

• I learned how to communicate with people, how to share, how to help each other and how to have conversations.

• It’s good to help others because it makes me feel good about my life.

• I hope that I will take part in this activity every year.
