What is a VPN?

VPN is an abbreviation for Virtual Private Network, which is a network that provides secure remote access to an enterprise network.

Why should I use VPN Client software?

VPN Client software allows you to connect to the Red River College network from an off‑campus computer over the Internet using your College log on credentials. It also provides extra security by encrypting data to and from your computer (called a Remote Host in the illustration below), creating a private VPN tunnel over the Internet for your communication. Once your data reaches the college, it is then unencrypted by the software.

Where do I get the VPN Client software?

RRC uses the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client. The client should already be installed on your laptop. If it is not, installation instructions are included in the document, Connecting to Red River College Virtual Private Network (VPN), that was sent to you along with your VPN user name and password.

Can I install the VPN software on my home desktop system?

No, installing the software on your personal computer is not permitted.

I forgot my VPN Password, what do I do?

If you forget your VPN user name or password, click VPN Password Reset, complete the Maestro form, and someone will contact you with the correct information.

How do I establish VPN connectivity?

You must already be connected to the Internet through an internet service provider (such as Shaw, Bell, or MTS) and have the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client installed on your laptop. If both of these apply, click Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client in the system tray at the bottom right‑hand corner of your task bar, click Connect, and then enter your VPN user name and password.

I need to work from home or outside the College, how do I get a VPN account?

You must complete an application for VPN access. The application form can be found at the following location: VPN Application Form.

Is my VPN account log on the same as my College log on?

No, your VPN account is a separate account from your College Active Directory account and will have a separate VPN user name and password. Your VPN log on credentials were sent to you after the College created your VPN account.
