A consortium involving Red River College, New Flyer Industries and other industry partners has been awarded $3.4 million in new federal funding to further develop battery-electric bus propulsion technology.

The new funding from Sustainable Development Technology Canada builds on the $1-million investment made by the provincial government last year to develop an all‑electric transit bus and charging system, said Innovation, Energy and Mines Minister Dave Chomiak, who extended his congratulations to all involved in the project for this latest development.

The all-electric bus development and demonstration project is a partnership between RRC, New Flyer, the Province of Manitoba, Manitoba Hydro, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

“Together we are developing an entirely electric bus system to get families around, not only in Winnipeg, but in cities all over North America,” said Chomiak. “The development of renewable and sustainable technologies is a priority for our government and the support being offered ensures we keep can keep moving forward.”

In addition to the $1-million investment in 2011, the province has invested $100,000 for the creation of an electric-vehicle learning and demonstration centre at RRC under Manitoba’s Electric Vehicle Road Map. Read More →

Over the past eight years, nearly 2,000 students have learned about ethics and sustainability from Red River College instructor Peter Denton.

But when his nickname became “Dr. Doom,” he decided it was time to write something that put our need to make choices for sustainability in a more positive light.

Denton, who also teaches technical communications at the college, launched Gift Ecology: Reimagining a Sustainable World (published by Rocky Mountain Books) on October 15th at McNally Robinson in Winnipeg.

Years of thinking about the subject and teaching all those students clearly had a positive impact on Denton, as Gift Ecology has already received glowing reviews.

Bill McKibben, American environmental activist and founder of 350.org, calls it “a very powerful book.” Warchild Canada founder and author Dr. Samantha Nutt, CM, found it “both inspiring and enlightening.” Dr. Vandana Shiva, an agricultural activist and author from India, calls it “a gift.”

And when Mardi Tindal, 40th Moderator of the United Church of Canada, described it “a profoundly hope-filled book,” it became clear that “Dr. Doom” was not a name Denton was likely to hear again.

Gift Ecology is available in hardcover and as an e-book in all formats.

The RRC Bookstore is hosting a reading and book-signing event at the Notre Dame Campus on Tuesday, November 6th from 3-5 p.m.

Congratulations to Red River College student and Navy reservist Diego Mendoza, the latest member of the RRC family to receive a Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Mendoza (shown at left), a student in RRC’s Chemical and Biosciences Technology Co-op program, was recognized for his outstanding contributions to Canada while serving in the Royal Canadian Navy. He received his award at a ceremony at HMCS Chippawa on Oct. 9, 2012.

Earlier this year, QEII Diamond Jubilee Medals were also awarded to former RRC Dean Dave Williamson, and current program coordinator Dwayne Forsman.

“There is no doubt that Red River College continues to be a place where great people gather and contribute to the community,” says Mendoza.

It’s got a longstanding reputation as a haven for hippies. But there’s a lot more to Wolseley than Birkenstocks and love beads.

That’s what Red River College student Laina Hughes has learned while researching a book about the storied neighbourhood — which she’s writing as part of her Creative Communications course work. She hopes to paint a picture of the neighbourhood that goes beyond the usual stereotypes (granola, cyclists, mosquito buffer zones, etc.), while positioning it within the larger context of Winnipeg’s cultural mosaic.

A longtime Wolseley resident herself, Hughes has always wanted to write a book, so when the opportunity to research her favourite neighbourhood arose, she knew the subject matter would prove a perfect fit.

“I thought this would be a great way to learn more about Wolseley’s history while celebrating the beauty and unique culture of the neighbourhood,” says Hughes.

“I think Wolseley residents are passionate about their neighbourhood, and I’ve gotten a lot of interest and support from the community so far.”

This year’s celebration takes place Friday, Nov. 23, from 6 to 9 p.m., in the Voyageur Dining Room at the Notre Dame Campus. As always, the Welcome event is hosted by RRC’s Diversity and Immigrant Student Support Department, with support from International Education and the RRC Students’ Association.

The College-wide event will feature live music and entertainment, including performances by Punjab Dancers, Paradize Band, Evan Coffie and Yoslai. There will also be fun activities for kids, lots of dancing, and sample foods from around the world.

Oye como va! Members of the Red River College Rebels Men’s Volleyball team will take their training sessions south of the border this holiday season — when they head to Cuba for an eight-day winter escape.

The team will spend Dec. 26 – Jan. 2, at the sunny Hotel Tropicoco near Havana, where they’ll train and compete against local athletes while learning about Cuban culture. The trip is being organized with help from the Cuban Ministry of Sport, meaning RRC’s Rebels will likely be squaring off against athletes from the Cuban National Team.

“It’s a great opportunity to go and train and compete against some very high-level players,” says Men’s Volleyball Coach Dan Gilbert. “It will also give us an opportunity to learn more about Cuban history … knowing they have a very strong culture in men’s volleyball, it’s a great way for us to combine our training with those lessons.”

Gilbert says the trip comes at a great time for the team — which currently boasts a number of players with previous Canadian Interuniversity Sport-level experience. To help raise funds, team members are raffling off a chance to accompany the team on their trip.

The lucky winner will receive an all-inclusive trip for two to the same resort — including all travel, meals, beverages, and many daily activities — and will have the option of following the team during their training, or simply soaking up the sights and sounds of Cuba.

Tickets are $20 each, or $50 for a three-pack. The latter option also includes a Rebels Athletics Season Pass, good for admission to all Rebels volleyball, basketball and soccer home matches, as well as the 2013 MCAC Volleyball Championships.

As an instructor at Red River College’s Winkler Campus, she advocates for balanced health in heart, spirit, mind and body.

And as a counselor in the community of Roseau River First Nation, Violet Caibaiosai prescribes an increased awareness of culture and history as the treatment for deficiencies in both mental and physical health.

“One of the most important things would be recognizing what our history is, and then taking an honest look at that history,” says Caibaiosai, who’s taught Applied Counselling courses at Winkler Campus since 2009.

“It’s not always a pretty one, but it’s a difficult one, and it’s important that it be looked at. There’s always an understanding that comes from knowledge and that’s what my goal is, whether it’s in larger society or our own communities. Because people have become so fearful — not only of society, but of themselves.”

A former Ontario native who grew up on the north shore of Lake Huron, Caibaiosai was raised by her parents and grandparents — the latter having imparted the importance of spiritual strength by teaching her about the holistic, healing qualities of traditional medicine.

She incorporates a similar respect for tradition among her students at RRC, noting many who go on to be counsellors may need to draw on that cultural knowledge while working with — and alongside — First Nation residents throughout Manitoba and Canada.

“It’s important for others to understand that history that we have together as a nation,” says Caibaiosai. “There’s a bridge that has to be built, and part of what I do in the classroom is to build those bridges of understanding.” Read More →

Red River College will play host to the 2012 Manitoba Colleges Athletics Conference (MCAC) Soccer Championships, running Oct. 20 and 21 at the Notre Dame Campus.

The RRC Rebels Men’s team will kick off the tournament at their semi-final match against Providence University College at noon on Saturday. The Rebels Women’s team will follow with their own semi-final game against Canadian Mennonite University at 2 p.m.

Ryan Ratushniak, Manager of Athletics and Recreation at RRC, says athletes on both teams are looking forward to the weekend, noting the College has made great strides with its soccer program since fielding teams for the first time in 2011. During last year’s MCAC Championships, RRC’s men’s team finished second, while the women’s team finished third.

“This is only our second year with soccer teams in the MCAC, so it is more challenging for us to compete with fully established programs,” says Ratushniak.

“That said, our athletes are very skilled, and with the training they have undergone since the beginning of September, they’re in a great position to compete for the MCAC Championship.”

Congratulations to Dwayne Forsman, Coordinator of Red River College’s Paramedicine – Primary Care Paramedic program, on being awarded a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Forsman will receive the honour in Ottawa on Nov. 19, at a special ceremony arranged by the Paramedic Association of Canada. He’s the second member of RRC’s extended family to have received the prestigious honour — former RRC Dean Dave Williamson also picked up a medal at last month’s Thin Air Winnipeg International Writers Festival.

Leaders from government, education and aerospace gathered to celebrate the opening of Red River College’s new Centre for Non-Destructive Inspection (CNDI) on September 29th. The facility is housed within a new RRC “industrial campus” located at Magellan Aerospace‘s production plant in Winnipeg.

Featuring some of Canada’s most advanced inspection equipment — including one of only two laser ultrasonic testing (Laser UT) systems in the country — CNDI provides a competitive advantage for the manufacturing sector in Manitoba while addressing the industry demand for skilled inspection staff.

“The productivity enhancements, when compared to other traditional methods of inspection are significant,” explained Don Boitson, Vice President and General Manager of Magellan Aerospace. “A component that would take eight hours to inspect using conventional methods can take as little as one hour to inspect utilizing Laser UT. The benefits provided through this technology are considerable in terms of efficiencies to both cost and schedule.”

In addition to the direct benefits for industry, Red River College students are in the unique position of being trained to use this leading edge technology.
