Intensive English for International Students

Important: Courses will be offered in a blended format comprised of a combination of face-to-face and online delivery. Students will need a computer/laptop with a webcam, access to internet connection, good quality headset and microphone.

This full-time intensive English language program is for students fulfilling the language requirements for their chosen academic program at Red River College Polytechnic.

  • Each program is approximately 15 weeks long, with 22-24 hours of classes (including 2-10 hours of online learning) per week.
  • Online classes include a combination of virtual classes (using WebEx or Microsoft Teams), collaborative work, online class content (text, videos, and other content) and individual activities that can be completed according to a flexible schedule.
  • Classes run Monday to Friday, with four or five hours per day, and are scheduled between the hours of 8am and 10pm (Winnipeg time zone).
  • If a student requires more than eight days off in a term, they will need to defer their studies to the next available term. This could impact the student’s study plan for their academic program start date.

Program Dates

  • Spring 2024: April 29, 2024 – August 9, 2024
  • Fall 2024: August 26, 2024 – December 6, 2024
  • Winter 2025: January 6, 2025 – April 25, 2025
  • Spring 2025: May 5, 2025 – August 15, 2025

Note: Programs and classes only run if a minimum number of students register.

Full-time Courses

Knowledge and skills are gained through adult English as an Additional Language classroom study, computer laboratory work, guest speakers, workshops, field trips, and observations of academic programs.

Foundations

This program is for students with Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels 3 to 6.

When you register for this program, you will be required to do an assessment test; this will provide proof of your English language proficiency so that you can be placed into the right level for your current language proficiency. When you complete one level, you may then enter the next level, until you reach the language proficiency that you require for your education goals. Your instructors will evaluate your progress and tell you if you are ready to advance to the next level.

Communication for Business and Finance

This full-time 14-week program is for students with a background or a definite interest in business. This course will help develop the English language skills that will enable students to interact in a business environment or pursue further training in business.

This bridging program will help you understand business materials, develop a business vocabulary, write reports, and learn other essential business communication for workplace settings. Knowledge and skills are gained through presentations, interviews, research assignments, and guest speakers.

Required minimum: IELTS 5.5 in any two skill areas and IELTS 6.0 in any two skill areas.

Communication for Health Professions

This full-time, 14-week communication program is for international students with a background or definite interest in health care who have not met the English language requirements for the Health Care Aide and Health Unit Clerk certificate program.

The program will help students:

  • develop English language skills useful in a health care environment
  • learn the skills and strategies necessary to succeed in a post-secondary institution
  • learn language specific to health care training and work
  • obtain cultural information about health care aides and health unit clerks in Canada
  • have many opportunities to connect with the community and health care industry through a diverse offering of workshops and outings

Students will participate in a weekly community connection groups project to not only connect classroom learning materials to the workplace but also gain experience.

Communication for Engineers and Technologists

This program is designed to prepare students for different technical academic programs offered at Red River College Polytechnic: Civil, Electric, Mechanic, Precision Machining, and Aircraft Maintenance Engineerings. Students looking to attend Clinical Laboratory, Quality Control and Pharmaceutical Manufacturing can also attend benefit from taking English for Technical Professions.

This full-time, 14-week communication program is intended for international students who have not met the English language requirements for their academic program and have a background/interest in the technical program mentioned above.

Communication for Engineers and Technologists helps students to:

  • Develop communication skills in English to effectively interact in the college academic setting and in their future workplace
  • Develop learning and study skills and strategies to successfully meet the linguistic, academic, cultural, and social demands of a college program
  • Learn the specific technical language of their college program through research, program exposure activities, classroom tasks, and independent study
  • Reinforce their communication skills and expand their knowledge about socio-cultural and employment competencies in presentations delivered by college teachers and students’ support and academic advisors

Communication for Culinary Arts

This program is designed to prepare students for the following culinary academic programs offered at Red River College Polytechnic: Culinary Arts, Culinary Skills, or Professional Baking and Patisserie.

This full-time, 14-week communication program is intended for international students who have not met the English language requirements for their academic program and have a background/interest in cooking or baking.

This program helps students:

  • Develop English language skills that will enable interaction in a culinary workplace
  • Learn the academic skills and strategies necessary to succeed in a college program
  • Learn language specific to culinary education and employment
  • Obtain cultural information about being a college student and being employed in Canada

Communication for Transportation Technology

This course is designed to prepare students for the following Transportation Technology programs offered at Red River College Polytechnic: Automotive Technician- diploma and certificate program, Collision Refinishing, Collision Repair and Refinishing, Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanic, and Outdoor Power Equipment Technician.

This full-time, 14-week communication program is intended for international students who have not met the English language requirements for their academic program and have a background/interest in cars, trucks, big-rigs, heavy duty equipment and outdoor power equipment.

This program helps students:

  • Develop English language skills that will enable interaction in a mechanic’s and/or technician’s workshop
  • Learn the academic skills and strategies necessary to succeed in a college program
  • Learn language specific to succeed academically in the transportation technology programs
  • Develop an understanding of what is needed to become employed as a mechanic or technician
  • Obtain cultural information about being a college student and being employed in Canada
