English for Academic and Professional Purposes
English for Academic and Professional Purposes (EAPP) is the first step toward your academic program at RRC Polytech.
There are two ways to meet the language requirements of the academic program you have chosen:

English for Academic and Professional Purposes
Is the EAPP pathway for me?
English for Academic and Professional Purposes is a full-time pathway designed to develop language skills for those studying, living, and working in Canada. After completing the pathway, students will join one of RRC Polytech’s academic programs.
Students will:
- Develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
- Improve vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar.
- Learn using advanced technology and online resources.
- Learn to communicate appropriately in the Canadian academic context and workplace.
What is the pathway like?
Classes run Monday to Friday, with two to six hours of classroom time each day (18 hours per week). Students take 12 hours per week of core skills (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing) at each level. Students also take two 3-hour targeted skills courses at every level. Classes are scheduled between 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.

Outside classroom time, there are weekly events organized by the Centre for Newcomer Integration (CNI) department for students to participate in events on/off campus in addition to volunteering opportunities.
At RRC Polytech, you will improve your English through:
- In-class instruction for listening, speaking, reading, and writing
- Cultural events
- Field trips
- Guest speakers
- Participation in weekly integration events on & off-campus
- Engagement with student association and campus clubs
- Participation in campus-wide events
Where are the classes held?
The EAPP pathway classes are held at RRC Polytech’s Exchange District Campus in Winnipeg. Activities may take place at both the Exchange District Campus and the Notre Dame Campus.
How long is the EAPP pathway?
Each term is 15 weeks long. You will submit a language assessment to determine at which level you start. Accepted language assessments and levels are listed below.
Understanding the different levels in the English for Academic and Professional pathway
Foundations
Length: 15 weeks

The Foundations level focuses on building basic English language skills. In Listening and Speaking Skills, students develop the ability to understand and participate in everyday social conversations, follow simple instructions, and respond to common requests. In Reading and Writing Skills, students enhance their reading comprehension through various strategies and develop foundational writing skills, including sentence and paragraph structure, grammar, and vocabulary.
Level 1
Length: 15 weeks

Level 1 focuses on foundational English language skills. In Listening and Speaking Skills, students develop comprehension to identify main ideas and details in discussions and enhance speaking abilities for small talk and short presentations. In Reading and Writing Skills, students apply strategies to improve reading comprehension and analyze texts, while developing writing skills to organize ideas within sentences and paragraphs, focusing on grammar and vocabulary.
Level 2
Length: 15 weeks

Level 2 builds on foundational skills to increase confidence in English language use. In Listening and Speaking Skills, students practice listening to various texts, identifying key points, and improving speaking functions such as giving advice and facilitating discussions. In Reading and Writing Skills, students enhance their ability to identify main ideas and supporting details, develop skimming and note-taking techniques, and write well-organized paragraphs with improved grammar and vocabulary.
Level 3
Length: 15 weeks

Level 3 further develops intermediate English language skills. In Listening and Speaking Skills, students enhance their listening comprehension and socio-cultural communication skills, practice conversation management, and deliver short presentations. In Reading and Writing Skills, students strengthen reading strategies like previewing and scanning, and focus on writing tasks such as outlines, summaries, and connected paragraphs, improving accuracy in grammar and vocabulary.
Level 4
Length: 15 weeks

Level 4 refines upper intermediate English language skills for academic and employment readiness. In Listening and Speaking Skills, students identify main ideas, supporting details, and academic vocabulary in complex texts, practice listening for bias and making inferences, and deliver presentations with strong fluency and accuracy. In Reading and Writing Skills, students enhance comprehension of complex texts through strategies like previewing and annotating, and compose essays and summaries, focusing on persuasive and personal writing skills with improved grammar and vocabulary.
Level 5
Length: 15 weeks
TOEFL iBT: 50 | IELTS Academic: 5.5 | TOEIC: 450 | Versant English Placement Test: 50 | CLB: 6 | Duolingo English Test: 95
Level 5 courses enhance advanced English language skills for academic and professional success. In Listening and Speaking Skills, students refine their academic listening skills, practice advanced note-taking, and deliver fluent and organized presentations and discussions. In Reading and Writing Skills, students build strategies for understanding complex texts, engage in the research process, and compose well-structured essays and summaries. These courses focus on advanced vocabulary, grammar, and critical thinking skills to prepare students for post-secondary education and professional contexts.
How many terms do I need?
The number of terms you will take is based on your language assessment and placement.
