International Student Ambassador Reflection – Olamide Collins-Longe

Why I became an ambassador

I became an International Student Ambassador because I wanted to help new students navigate school life and feel welcomed in a new environment. As an international student myself, I understand how overwhelming it can be to adjust to a new place. I wanted to share my experiences and create an environment where every student I interacted with felt seen, valued, and appreciated.

My experience in the program

Being part of the Ambassador Program has been an amazing experience. I had the opportunity to volunteer at various events both on and off campus. One of the highlights was volunteering at the Assiniboine Park Zoo Lights and attending Camp Manitou. These experiences allowed me to build connections with other ambassadors and students and represent the school in a positive way. I also had the chance to speak with new and current students, sharing my journey and listening to theirs. These moments helped me realize how powerful our stories are and how much we can learn from one another.

How I’ve Grown

This role helped me grow in multiple ways. My communication skills improved as I had to interact with people from different backgrounds, listen actively, and speak confidently in various settings. My leadership skills were strengthened through event planning, guiding new students, and being a resource, they could trust. I also expanded my network by connecting with students, staff, and community partners. Most importantly, this experience deepened my passion for community and inclusion. I learned to appreciate diverse cultures and stories and found joy in supporting others.

Why you should become an ambassador

Becoming an ambassador isn’t just about volunteering; it’s about impact. It’s a rewarding opportunity to grow personally and professionally while giving back. You’ll develop leadership, communication, and networking skills that go beyond the classroom. You’ll meet amazing people, form lasting friendships, and be part of something bigger than yourself.

If you’re someone who wants to make a difference, connect with others, and grow in a supportive community, this is the perfect opportunity for you.
