International Student Ambassador Reflection – Avish Nagiana

When I first arrived at RRC Polytech as an international student, I was filled with excitement… and just a little bit of nervousness. Everything was new — the campus, the people, even the weather (hello snow 😅). So when I found out about the opportunity to become an International Student Ambassador, I knew I wanted to be part of something that could make the journey easier and more welcoming for others like me.

Over the past few months, this role has given me more than I ever expected. I’ve been part of some amazing events that brought students together in the most heartwarming ways — from cheering at the Santa Parade, to cozying up around a campfire at Camp Manitou while making bannock, to volunteering at Manitoba Harvest and giving back to the community in small but meaningful ways. I even helped lead campus tours during Red River Ready, and explored Métis and Francophone culture during the snowy, magical Festival du Voyageur.

Through these experiences, I’ve had countless conversations with students — some excited, some anxious, some simply looking for a connection. I saw friendships forming over hot chocolate, people laughing through falls on the ice, and quiet students slowly opening up during events. And somewhere along the way, I realized how much I was growing too.

This role helped me build confidence — from guiding students across campuses to speaking up at events. I developed leadership skills without even realizing it at first. I learned to listen, support, and engage with people from all backgrounds. And the best part? I got to be myself — sharing silly jokes, being approachable, and creating spaces where people could just be them.

To anyone thinking of becoming an ambassador: go for it. You don’t need to be perfect, just present. Sometimes, the smallest gesture — a smile, a chat, a helping hand — can make the biggest difference in someone’s day. And trust me, the memories you’ll make are worth it all.

To the CIEGP team, thank you for letting me be a part of this incredible experience. And to every student I met — thank you for being a part of my journey. I hope these shared moments turned into sweet memories for you too. 💛
