International Student Ambassador Reflection – Alma Azcorra
When I applied to become an International Student Ambassador, I didn’t overthink it, I saw an opportunity to help others like me: new to Winnipeg, adjusting to college life, and in some cases, settling in with their families. I simply answered from the heart and hit submit.
At the time, I was in my final academic term, balancing coursework and co-op applications, and when I got the interview call, I thought about how overwhelming my own start had been. Being selected changed everything, it wasn’t just about me anymore; I immediately felt a strong sense of responsibility to support fellow international students, to help them discover not just the academics, but the community, connections, and joy this experience can offer.
Meeting my fellow ambassadors for the first time during the welcome video shoot was a turning point, on top of that, speaking on camera was outside my comfort zone, but that moment reminded me that this was bigger than my nerves, it was about making new students feel seen, informed, and welcomed.
I had the privilege of working with three amazing ambassadors who inspired me with their resilience and energy, together, we shared unforgettable experiences like volunteering at Harvest, celebrating at Zoo Lights and Festival du Voyageur, and spending a meaningful day at Camp Manitou, however, the most powerful moments came from simple conversations with students who recognized me from the welcome video or the online scavenger hunt, some had questions, others just wanted to say hello and each interaction reminded me why this role matters.
One memory I’ll always cherish is leading a campus tour, I had the honor of showing 25 students around the same campus where I had spent nearly a year. One year ago, I was in their shoes, full of questions and uncertainties and it felt like my own way of saying goodbye to the Exchange District Campus before heading off to my co-op.
This experience has been a transformative one; my communication skills grew through public speaking and event facilitation, I also learned to lead with confidence, support others, and step up even when unsure, I built connections with students, faculty, and professionals, but above all, I found a deeper sense of purpose and belonging.
I’m grateful for the support of my ambassador teammates and the CIEGP team over the past few months, especially Parmeet, whose kindness and guidance made a huge difference in every single activity. I’ll miss being part of this incredible program, but I will always carry the lessons and memories with me.
If you’re thinking about becoming an International Student Ambassador, do it. Say yes to something that will change your life. It’s an opportunity to help others, grow, and have an incredible time while doing it. You won’t regret it!
