Anti-Racism & You: Acknowledging Systemic Racism in Canadian History

Anti-Racism Workshop #3: Acknowledging Systemic Racism in Canadian History

“We don’t have racism here in Canada” or “We are not like the United States” are some responses when acknowledging racism in Canada. We often learn history in a biased way – historical events presented positively and constructively. In contrast, the aspects of that same history that demonstrate oppression is less favourable and can make folks uncomfortable. How can I be a part of something so terrible? The problem is that, for most folks, it’s difficult to imagine the kind of inhumanity that led to these horrific acts. Confronting the realities of colonization, slavery, the Indian Act, Residential Schools, and anti-immigration policies of the past is difficult. There’s so much violence and discrimination, and there’s no good reason to justify it. Confronting these realities will support those on the journey of Anti-Racism, which finds folks on many different paths or unsure which direction to take.

Our goal in the RRC Polytech community is to transform our culture and institution where anti-racism guides our leadership, policies, and actions. Open to all RRC Polytech students, faculty, and staff, a series of Anti-Racism educational workshops are set to take place this Winter 2023 term.

This third workshop of a seven-workshop series will uncover the hard histories that we tell to honour our full humanity. Acknowledging the past and its connection to the present will help take action toward an anti-racist society.
