Canadian Connections program keeps students connected while exploring Winnipeg !

Even in the middle of a frosty Winnipeg winter, RRC Polytech’s Canadian Connection program is finding creative ways to help to ensure a warm welcome to the more than 2,000+ international students.

As part of Canadian Connection, a group of about 15 students and staff enjoyed the dazzling Zoo Lights displays at Assiniboine Park in December in what organizers are hoping marks the first in-person event, with more to follow as public health orders allow.

Because the COVID-19 pandemic has caused may classes and activities to shift to online, now more than ever, the program aims to provide students with opportunities to form relationships while taking experiencing some of the best of Manitoba.

“It was cold, but our hearts were warm; you could tell that people were craving that human connection,” says Jeanine Webber, Executive Director, Academic, RRC Polytech. “Learning about Canadian traditions really deepens the experience for our students. And while there’s learning in the virtual classroom, there is also an opportunity to create and strengthen cultural understanding.”

And this exchange of culture goes both ways, says Webber, noting students shared stories about Diwali, the festival of lights that is India’s biggest holiday of the year, and is also celebrated in other parts of the world.

“Amazing” is how first-year student Harjinder Dhesi describes the Zoo Lights displays, but he notes, nothing compared to the chance to connect in person with peers for the first time since arriving in Canada from India in September.

“The best part was meeting all of the other students. We talked, we shared our experiences,” Dhesi says, adding that sipping hot chocolate was another highlight.

Though events look a little different during the COVID-19 pandemic, Canadian Connection organizers are still finding opportunities for students to interact. Upcoming plans include skating at The Forks, a visit to the Qaumajuq at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, and a trip to Festival du Voyageur.

“We want students to experience all that our province has to offer and explore their surroundings. Often, students are coming here without any family, so this is an opportunity for them to make friends,” says Parmeet Ghatoaura, International Student Support Coordinator at the Centre for International Education and Global Partnerships.
