Be Aware! Scams and Fraudulent Phone Calls

Winnipeg police are warning about a phone scam targeting people in Winnipeg. They may pretend to be calling from the Canadian Revenue Agency or another government agency. They are trying to get you to share financial or personal information over the phone.

Scammers can be very convincing over the phone. Be very careful not to share your personal information or to respond to requests without verifying that you are communicating with the correct person and agency. You can always hang up, and call the information line on the government website (do not use a number given over the phone) to confirm any information you are given.

Remember that Canadian government representatives will never use threatening language, or require immediate payment over the phone using credit card, wire transfer, or bitcoin.
