Be your own Career Exploration guide

September 11, 2013

If you are like many of the people that I meet who are looking to attend post-secondary school, you are looking for guidance on what program to take. There are many of us at Red River College that can provide you with information about the programs, career opportunities, etc. but only you can begin the process of determining what will be the best fit for you. There are a number of tools here at the college that can guide that process but it is you that needs to answer questions about yourself to determine the answer. By visiting www.rrc.ca/careerexploration you can find the Career Exploration Workbook to help you start with that process. Here, you can also obtain access to Career Cruising.

Many people want to make a lot of money, many people want to contribute to their community, but it is important that the work you do is something that you will enjoy and be excited about. It is for this reason that you need to define your priorities. We spend a lot of time at work so its important to pursue a field that is right for you. There are things to consider like lifestyle, future plans, your personality, your learning style, your values that all together can determine what might be a good career fit for you as an individual.

What kind of a work environment do you picture yourself in? What kinds of hours do you see yourself working? Shift work? Monday to Friday, regular office hours…. These are all questions to consider relative to the fields that you are considering.

The Career Exploration tools that are on the web page listed above are a good starting point. Once you have been through this process and narrowed things down a little bit, you might look at meeting with an Academic Advisor, taking a campus tour or doing a little bit more research on Red River College programs. You can obtain a current copy of Red River College’s Viewbook by visiting www.rrc.ca/visitwithus.

Best of luck in your search!!
