Red River College’s Performance Support Conversations Program

  • The College values the expertise of its employees and wants to support feedback between managers and employees.
  • A new Program and resources have been developed to support these performance support conversations.

Benefits of Performance Support Conversations

Why is it important for managers and employees to discuss performance when things are going well?

  • Having performance support conversations has many benefits including:
    • Providing an opportunity for improved communication between the manager and employee
    • Recognizing the commitment and contributions made by RRC employees to further the mission and vision of the organization
    • Leading to stronger alignment to the College’s strategic plan
    • Leading to increased commitment to the job due to the sharing of clear expectations
    • Providing a great way for both parties to show appreciation and recognize each other’s accomplishments

Performance Support Conversations Program Process Overview

The process associated with performance support conversations is outlined below

  1. Communicating
    • Management communicates to the department that performance support conversations are being implemented and explain the process (email/meeting)
      • Resources in the Manager’s Guide that supports this communication
  1. Scheduling
    • Managers schedule the performance support conversations with appropriate notice to allow employees to prepare
  2. Preparing
    • Managers
      • Review program materials
      • Prepare for performance support conversation by filling out relevant parts of the Performance Support Conversations Program form
    • Employee
      • Reviews program materials
      • Prepare for performance support conversation by completing the employee goals template to be brought into the performance support conversation meeting
  3. Implementing
    • Performance support conversation is held
  1. Following up
    • Performance support conversation is documented, and form is sent via email to the employee, from the manager
    • Follow up meetings with employee as agreed in performance support conversation
    • Department is advised that performance support conversations scheduled for that period are completed
