Mental Health Training

For Faculty

Supporting Students in Distress While Teaching Remotely

Note: Instructors can register for this training through Faculty Development.

Join us for this 90-minute workshop on how you can support student mental health and refer students in distress to appropriate resources, while teaching remotely.

You will learn:

  • how stress affects learning;
  • your role in identifying students in distress, including limitations and boundaries;
  • evidence based and proactive strategies to promote student wellbeing;
  • an effective referral process, including for emergency situations; and
  • how Counselling Services is currently operating.

A reading package will be provided prior to the session so that much of the meeting time can be spent on practical application. Please bring a current course that you would like to workshop; at various points in the session you will be prompted to integrate suggestions into your course so you may want to have it handy.

For Staff and Faculty

The Working Mind

The Working Mind is an education-based program designed to address and promote mental health and reduce the stigma toward mental illness in a workplace setting. We’re pleased to offer virtual delivery.

There is one version for managers/supervisors (8 hours) and another for employees/frontline staff (6.5 hours). These courses include scenario-based practical applications and custom videos of people with lived experience of mental illness, reference guides and related handouts.

The manager and employee versions both include:

  • A focus on dispelling the myths of mental health problems and mental illnesses, aiming to reduce associated stigma
  • An overview of the Mental Health Continuum Tool
  • Self-assessment of one’s own mental health along the continuum
  • Strategies one can apply at each point along the continuum

The managers’ version includes additional course content, such as:

  • Workplace accommodations and return to work
  • How to observe changes in employees along the continuum
  • Appropriate actions to take
  • How to communicate with employees about mental health and illness in a workplace context

safeTALK deliveries are on hold as this training is best experienced in-person.

Supporting Your Mental Health While Working From Home
