RRC Goes Smoke-Free
RRC “Butts out” on January 1, 2020
We are pleased to announce that effective January 1, Red River College is “butting out” and all of our campuses will become 100 per cent smoke-free. That means smoking and vaping will no longer be permitted anywhere at any of our campuses across the province.
We’re committed to creating a healthy, environmentally-friendly space for our students and staff. If you choose to smoke, please do so off-campus.
Red River College strives to provide a healthy environment to work, learn, study and live and to contribute to the overall well-being of students, employees and visitors.
As one of Manitoba’s largest institutes of applied learning and one of Manitoba’s Top Employers, Top Greenest Employers, and the largest trainer of healthcare professionals in Manitoba it’s important to play a leadership role by setting the example and putting an end to smoking and vaping everywhere on-campus.
We all share the same air. By moving to adopt a 100% smoke-free policy, we will eliminate exposure to second-hand smoke on campus that is known to be detrimental to people’s health and that contributes to local air pollution.
As of January 1, 2020, all of Red River College’s Campuses will be 100% smoke-free. Smoking any form of tobacco and/or cannabis, vaping and use of e-cigarettes and smokeless tobacco (commonly known as chewing tobacco) will not be permitted anywhere on our campuses.
Red River College’s new policy is in accordance with legislation governing smoking, vaping, and cannabis use in Manitoba, which makes consumption of recreational cannabis in the workplace illegal.
Do you want to butt out too?
We understand that this will be an adjustment for some staff and students and we appreciate your support and cooperation as we make this important change on-campus. While we know that this will be a change in habit for some, we expect everyone’s support as we implement this college-wide policy.
If you’re interested in quitting, there are programs and resources are available at no cost through the Health Centre, and we will be providing ongoing information to help everyone understand how they can support the College’s decision to go smoke-free.
