STARS is a voluntary, self-reporting framework that helps Colleges and Universities track their sustainability performance in academic, operational, planning and policy areas and more.

There isn’t a single path to complete STARS. Many institutions hire students to complete the project, some contract out the work. At Red River College our STARS project was coordinated through the Sustainability Office and engaged more than 70 staff and faculty in the process.
Here’s an overview of our STARS journey….
April, 2011 – The Sustainability Office prepared a briefing for College Executive (that who, what, when and why of STARS) and received the green light to proceed. Then it was off to President’s Council (comprised of College Executive, Directors and Deans) to tell them know about the project and address their questions and or concerns. Two big hurdles crossed.
Earth Day, April 22, 2011 – RRC was recognized as one of Canada’s Greenest Employers. To celebrate this achievement the College held its first State of Sustainability where students and staff were invited to learn about the College’s achievements to date. At this event, College President Stephanie Forsyth announced that RRC would be participating in STARS.
April 27, 2011 – RRC officially registered as a STARS participant. The timeclock started… 365 days to complete the project.
Summer, 2011 – The Sustainability Office explored how other institutions completed STARS, did a preliminary assessment of which credits to pursue, met with College staff identified as playing key roles in the project and developed a committee framework to complete the job.
September – November, 2011 – Throughout the Fall we held preliminary meetings with seven groups who were struck to complete STARS. Three Oversight Committees were established to provide broad guidance for the project and four Working Groups were set up to decide which credits to pursue and compile the required information. Altogether more than 70 College staff and faculty were involved in the project.
November, 2011 – To fulfill a STARS credit we administered our first Sustainability Literacy Survey to 2500 students. This survey measured student sustainability knowledge and interest. Check out the results of the survey here.
January, 2012 – The College President and Sustainability Office streamed an event to all College campuses called Reaching for the STARS: How RRC is Advancing Sustainability. The purpose of this event was to tell the College community about STARS and seek staff input on sustainability priorities for the future.
January – April, 2012 – Lots of meetings. Lots of information gathering. Lots of credit inputting.
March, 2012 – Completed 2nd Sustainability Literacy Survey.
April 23, 2012 – We hosted the College’s 2nd annual State of Sustainability. The focus of this event was to share the results of STARS with students and staff and launch our one-year Sustainability Workplan. We also celebrated being recognized as one of Canada’s Greenest Employers for the second year in a row. Here are photos of the event.
