Rebels Fall Short at NIAC Championships

February 19, 2019

Both Rebels basketball teams compete at the NIAC Championships in Sisseton, SD this past weekend, and unfortunately both fell short in their quests of winning a championship.

The women’s team lost their tournament opener, NIAC quarter-final, 65-36 loss to the 2nd seed and eventual NIAC Champions, PUC Pilots. The Rebels finish their season with a 5-11 record and freshman guard Cyzelle Mas was named to the all-conference team.

The men’s team were able to exact some revenge for the women’s team has they defeated the PUC Pilots in their quarter final game, 96-85 in overtime. Guard Torrez McKoy led the Rebels with a magnificent 44 points, 7 assists and 3 steals while post Mark Ridd had 15 points and 15 boards.  Later that day, Ridd and McKoy were named NIAC All-Conference while veteran forward Steve Willamson was named honorable mention.

On Saturday, the Rebels season ended with a tough 74-72 loss to the LTTC Lakers. It was a back and forth contest with multiple lead changes that ultimately the Lakers won thanks in part to scoring on RRC turnovers and securing more offensive possessions through turnovers and rebounding. Ridd once again led the way for the Rebels with 26 points and 13 rebounds, with McKoy also scoring 25 points, 9 boards and 7 assists.

McKoy was terrific down the stretch for the Rebels this season, averaging 28 points, 9 boards and 6 assists over the final 9 games. The Rebels finished their 2018-19 season with an overall record of 15-8 and a MCAC championship.
