Defending MCAC women’s soccer champions, the Red River Rebels have started their season without a loss, putting the league on notice that they are more than capable of keeping their title. With a 2-0 record coming into the weekend, the Rebels travelled to Brandon to face their stiffest test yet, the Brandon Bobcats. Last year’s finalists gave the Rebels all they could handle, and forced them to a 2-2 tie. The Rebels rebounded back into form on Sunday at home, defeating the ACC Cougars 5-0. Forward Julia Friesen led the team with a hat trick, while Nadine Reimer and Kendra Moen each chipped in for the Rebels. The Rebels sit atop of the MCAC standings with a 3-0-1 record.
The men’s Rebels soccer team also atop of the MCAC standings after week 2 with a 3-0-1 record. This comes to surprise for many across the league, as the Rebels missed the playoffs last season. New Head Coach Yiannis Tsalatsidis hoped his team would get a fast start this season, and winning their first season two matches achieved that goal. The Rebels remain unbeaten after a tough 2-2 draw in Brandon against the BU Bobcats on Saturday, then the men’s team went all offense against an overwhelmed ACC Cougars squad on Sunday, cruising to a 4-0 victory. The Rebels used a balanced attack, with Konrad Wazny, Mohammed Reda, Anderson Pereira, and Alex Castro all scoring. Pereira has lead the Rebels this season in scoring with 5 goals in 4 games, including 2 game winners and the game tying goal at Brandon.
Both teams have the upcoming weekend off. They return to action with a pair of home games, Saturday October 1st vs the CMU Blazers and Sunday October 2nd against Les Rouge of USB. All games start at 12:00pm.
