Rebels Weekend Wrap- February 11-14th

Busy weekend for the RRC Athletics department with all 6 varsity teams in action.

The women’s basketball team regular season ended on a high note, defeating the U of Winnipeg Wesmen 75-42 Thursday at home in the North Gym. Raven Boulanger led the team with 18 points, 12 Rebounds, 3 Assists and 3 Steals on the night. Forward Lacey Finnbogason had a strong game, scoring 18 points, 7 Rebounds and 5 Assists, while forward Lindsay Young chipped in with 16 points and 10 rebounds of her own. The Rebels finish the regular season in 2nd place with a 8-4 record and will face the Providence Pilots in their playoff semi-final, Saturday February 20th 12:00pm at Red River College. The winner will face eiher UW or the CMU Blazers in the Championship final Sunday February 21st at 1:00pm in the North Gym.

In a preview of a MCAC semi-final, the Rebels men’s basketball team fell to the U of Winnipeg Wesmen 79-74. Guard Taylor Brown led all scorers with 22 points, and teammate Gliff Macalua had a strong effort with 19 points. With the loss, the Rebels finished the season with a 2-10 record and in 4th place. They will face the number #1 ranked Wesmen Saturday February 20th at 2:00pm with the winner facing either Providence or CMU in the Championship final on the 21st at 3:00pm. All game hosted by RRC in the North Gym.

Both volleyball teams also finished their regular seasons with mixed results. The men’s team beat USB on Thursday 3-0 (20-25, 19-25, 20-25). They finish in 3rd place with a 6-6 and will face CMU in the MCAC playoffs semi-final. The women’s team lost their final two games of the season, 3-1 (25-16, 25-22, 26-28, 25-16) to USB and 3-0 (25-10,25-20,25-18) to U of Winnipeg, and did not qualify for the playoffs. The MCAC Volleyball Championships will be hosted by Providence College, February 27-28.

Finally, both Rebel futsal teams headed to St.Boniface on the weekend for a pair of games, passing the midway mark of their respective regular seasons. The women’s team remains unbeaten, earning ties with USB (3-3) and and ACC (2-2) and a 5-2 win over Brandon. The men’s team split their games on the weekend, losing to USB 5-4 and defeating Brandon 14-6 and ACC 8-1. The Rebels Futsal teams next host USB February 22nd, and CMU February 24th, both nights starting with the women’s games at 7:30pm.
