The Rebels women’s basketball team have found their game at the right time, sweeping a pair of game over the weekend, including knocking off the previously undefeated and MCAC top team, CMU Blazers 58-40 Friday night. Lacey Finnbogosan led the Rebels with 15 points while Jodene Kowalchuk chipped in with 13 of her own. Lindsay Young had a huge outing as well, scoring 10 points and hauling in 14 rebounds. The Rebels followed this huge victory with a 60-42 exhibition game win over the USB Rouge Saturday night at home. With the win against CMU, the Rebels improved to 7-4 on the season and have clinched 2nd place in the MCAC playoffs. Unfortunately, the men’s team did not fair as well, losing both of their games on the weekend, a close 86-84 decision to CMU, followed by a 85-69 pasting by USB. With the loses, the Rebels fall to 2-9 in MCAC regular season play, and will have the 4th place spot in playoffs. Both basketball teams finish the regular season at home on Thursday February 11th against the U of Winnipeg Wesmen, women’s game starting at 6:00pm. Red River College will be the hosts for the MCAC Basketball Championships, February 20-21, with all the games held in the North Gym on Notre Dame campus, semi-finals on Saturday, finals on Sunday.
The Rebels volleyball teams were also in action this past weekend, splitting a pair of home games with the ACC Cougars from Brandon. Women’s team lost a hard fought contest 3-1 (23-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-13) while the men were able to get past the Cougars 3-1 (25-17, 25-22, 21-25, 25-16). Both teams finish off their respective MCAC regular seasons with games at USB on Thursday and at home against the U of Winnipeg Friday night, women’s game starting at 6:00pm.
