Busy weekend for Red River College sports with both soccer teams finishing their respective regular seasons and the women’s basketball and volleyball teams competing in exhibition tournaments.
The Rebels Women’s Soccer team capped a perfect 8-0 MCAC regular season defeating Providence University College Pilots on Sunday 6-0. Coach Doug Lawrie’s player of the game was Stephanie Morris, who played a solid 90 minutes and scored two great goals. Congrats also to the 2015 MCAC Women’s Soccer Scoring Leader Jessica Lister.The Rebels team Captain scored 13 goals in 8 games, including a goal in each game. With the Rebels clinching first place in the MCAC, they start the playoffs against PUC this weekend at Providence University College, 12:00pm on Saturday October 24th. The MCAC league final occurs the following day, Sunday October 25th at 1:00pm at PUC in Otterbourne, MB.
The Rebels Men’s Soccer team weekend started well on Saturday, defeating St.Bonfiace in a highly emotional contest. TJ Schultz and Paul Nonnemacher scored for the Rebels, along with a great goaltending from Mark Bain. The win set up a do or die match up with PUC on Sunday, with the winner earning a playoff spot. Unfortunately the Rebels came up short, losing to the Pilots 2-1. With the loss, the Rebels record fell to 4-4-2 on the season, 5th place and out of the playoffs.
Finally, the Rebels Women’s Basketball team hosted a 6 team exhibition tournament at RRC for some local club, all-star and alumni teams. Coach Jae Panglinan’s squad finished with 2-1 record defeating the Manitoba U17 team in the third place game. The Rebel’s Women’s Volleyball team competed in an exhibition tournament in Devil’s Lake, North Dakota over the weekend, gaining experience against American Collegiate squads along with some fellow MCAC teams. The volleyball Rebels have their home opener this Friday October 23rd against St.Bonfiace at 6:00pm.
