On a brisk Saturday night at Red River College, within the cozy confines of the Notre Dame Campus North Gym, the Red River Rebels Men’s and Women’s Volleyball teams swept a pair of matches over their rivals at Canadian Mennonite University.
The Rebel’s men’s team were unstoppable on Saturday night, cruising to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-16) win over the Blazers. The Rebels were strong start to finish, never trailing in the match. Outside hitter Kevin Bommersbach led the team with 11 kills, while fellow Outside Hitter Mitchell Hendry also had a strong game with 9 kills.
“We are really pleased with the game tonight, our hard work in practice is starting to translate into the games.” said Co-Head Coach Dylan Power. “I think our game is slowly starting to round into form”.
The Rebels improve their MCAC record to 5-2 on the season.
It was also a successful night for the Women’s Rebels. The Women’s team improved their MCAC record to 3-4 on the season with a thrilling 3-2 ((26-24, 20-25, 17-25, 25-22, and 15-12 ) win over CMU. Head Coach Chris MacLennan was happy with the effort and attention to detail put forth by his group in the 5 set thriller, “After a solid week of training, we were prepared for a dog fight and thats exactly what we got. Countless times, the girls showed resiliency and relied on our game plan to help us climb back into sets and eventually our will to win served us well”.
Wilma Oombash had a break out game with 42 assists and 16 digs on the heels of some good passing and defence from libero Jen Forsythe who finished with 21 digs. The Rebels will look to continue their good work this week as they take on St. Boniface on Wednesday night at 6pm before traveling to Otterburne to take on the Pilots from Providence University College in a home and home before hitting the Christmas Break.
