These individual three-hour sessions are tailored for part-time industry instructors, but everyone is welcome. All sessions start at 5:30 p.m. and are held in the eTV Studio at the Notre Dame Campus. The sessions will be available through online streaming for those who register at least one week in advance.

As workshops are interactive and participation is expected, space is limited for live streaming. Registration will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Priority will be given to out-of-town attendees.

Facilitating Adult Education: Theory and practice →
February 7, 2018 – 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Teaching adults is different from teaching children. To be effective in teaching adults, it is important to know your audience and have a general understanding of how adults learn. The workshop will introduce the characteristics of adult learners and how they apply to the teaching and learning process. The workshop focuses on how to apply the principles of adult learning to create successful instruction. The workshop is designed for instructors and trainers in all fields who present information to adults. This is an excellent workshop to take first as it will help you understand concepts discussed in later workshop offerings.

Aligning Learning Outcomes and Assessments
February 21, 2018 – 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

The most important task in teaching is to ensure that the assessment strategy and tools you are using actually measure what you say or think they are measuring. A well-written learning outcome will give a good indication of what kinds of assessments are appropriate, and the skills and knowledge your students will need to demonstrate. The clearer the learning outcome is written, the easier it is to determine an appropriate assessment. We will discuss how to recognize and write clear learning outcomes and a variety of ways to assess them. Do you need your students to recall, demonstrate, analyze, or evaluate? Your answer indicates the cognitive level in the learning outcome and points toward the selection of appropriate assessment.

Working within Ethical, Legal, and College Policies
February 28, 2018 – 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Policies are necessary to ensure consistency amongst an organization, enabling employees to make decisions objectively and rationally, but can sometimes be difficult to understand and implement in your daily activates. It is also important to consider the ethical and legal aspects of each decision. This workshop will introduce you to the College policies that may affect your job and how to implement them into your classroom and online teachings. Topics will include Academic Integrity and Misconduct; Intellectual Property and Copyright; Student Code of Rights and Responsibilities; Confidentiality of Student Academic Records; Course Outlines; and safety.

Flexible Assessments
March 7, 2018 – 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Educational process should be dynamic and involve ongoing examination, evaluation, and refinement. Traditionally, assessment was used primarily as a summative tool to evaluate the learner’s ability to successfully reproduce what they had been “taught”. Assessment is now seen as intrinsic part of the learning process. More and more, ongoing formative assessment practices are shaping the way instructors interact with their learners. Formative and flexible assessment methods allow us to meet the needs of learner’s diverse learning styles and ways of showing what they know. In this workshop we will discuss assessment issues and tools in general, and specifically examine appropriate, rigorous and flexible assessment methods. Participants should have already attended the “Aligning Learning Outcomes and Assessments” workshop noted above.

LEARN Learning Management System 1
March 14, 2018 – 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Bring your laptop and follow along as we go through the basic functions of LEARN and many of its capabilities. We will start with a walk through of the functions and how to transfer the content from a Master Shell to a Delivery Shell and learn to use Gradebook for online courses and classroom/blended. This workshop is meant to be an introduction and is ideal for instructors who are new to using LEARN or for those who would like to incorporate it into their classroom teaching strategies.

LEARN Learning Management System 2
March 21, 2018 – 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

This workshop will delve in deeper into the intricacies and functions of LEARN. Topics will include a further in depth look at Gradebook, scheduling assessments, considering student navigation, and student statistics. Using your own laptop and course shells, you will be able to apply the skills discussed and learned to your existing courses. Be sure to bring questions! Ideally, participants of this workshop will have either attended the first session or have worked in LEARN for several months.
