In the Holiday Spirit
For many of us, December is closely associated with eating and entertaining, celebrating with friends and family and going to parties. Stay tuned this December for RRC Library’s “In the Holiday Spirit” series, which will highlight some fantastic resources from RRC Library’s collection. Today’s topic will inspire those who like to make sweet things – desserts, cookies and more.
Trained pastry chef and writer Tish Boyle has designed recipes to indulge every cookie lover’s taste and craving — from timeless Colossal Peanut Butter Cookies, Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cookies, and other standbys to wholesome favourites such as Banana Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies and stylish originals such as Triple-Ginger Pecan Biscotti.
When Sticky Fingers Sweets & Eats opened in 2002, it instantly became one of the most popular bakeries in D.C. and was voted D.C.’s best bakery by The Washington City Paper, and chef Doron Petersan found herself beating out traditional bakers on the Food Network’s Cupcake Wars. Sweet! is packed with one hundred of her beloved recipes – from indulgent snacks like Fudgetastic Brownies and Oatmeal Raisin Cookies to breakfast treats like Pecan Spice Coffee Cake and Cranberry Ginger Scones, and from celebratory desserts like Chocolate Seltzer Cake and Red Velvet Cupcakes to Sticky Fingers’ most popular sweets – Little Devils, Cowvins, and Sticky Buns. Petersan also includes “love bite” nutritional tips and valuable tricks-of-the- trade techniques that every home baker will appreciate.
Hip. Cool. Fashion-forward. These aren’t adjectives you’d ordinarily think of applying to baked goods. Think again. Not every baker wants to re-create Grandma’s angel food cake of cherry pie. Matt Lewis and Renato Poliafito certainly didn’t, when they left their advertising careers behind, pooled their life savings, and opened their dream bakery, Baked, in Brooklyn, New York, a few years back. The visions that danced in their heads were of other, brand-new kinds of confections… things like a Malt Ball Cake with Mild Chocolate Frosting, which captures the flavour of their favourite Whoppers candies (and ups the ante with a malted milk ball garnish). Whether trendsetting or tried-and-true, every idea in this book is freshly baked.
Each issue includes several tutorials, reviews of cake shows and contests across the country, fresh ideas, new products and business information for the professional. The purpose of the magazine has always been to bring new ideas, techniques and skills to its readers through the use of step-by-step tutorials, themed showcases, new product information and more. As an industry that thrives on sharing, ACD inspires creativity by giving all its readers access to top-level talents from around the world.
A collection of recipes that showcase the sweet, rich, and sunny-colored delight made by nature’s hardest worker—the bee. Honey is a natural whole food that can be used in many different dishes and enjoyed in a variety of ways—this book introduces you to the countless possibilities of nature’s sweetest natural ingredient.
