October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month!

The theme for Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2020 is “Do Your Part. #BeCyberSmart.” Empowering individuals and organizations to own their role in protecting their part of cyberspace, with a particular emphasis on the key message for 2020: “If you connect it, protect it.”

What is Phishing?

The term phishing is a spin on the word fishing, because criminals are dangling a fake lure hoping users will bite by providing their banking info, account credentials, gift card numbers, etc.

Phishing emails also can include attachments and links to other websites, which can automatically download malware onto your computer.

Tips for Phishing Prevention

  • Be suspicious of any email that requests sensitive information. Most organizations stopped making such requests via email long ago. If you receive an email
asking for sensitive information, it is most likely a phishing attempt.
  • Think before you click. Take time to scrutinize any email that asks you to click on a link or open an attachment. Phishing emails often have a sense of urgency, contain spelling and grammar mistakes, and appear to come from a legitimate sender.
  • When in doubt, check it out. If an email looks suspicious, trust your instincts and check directly with the sender by phone or send a new email. Never reply to a suspicious email.
