Orthopedic Shoe Coverage

January 2, 2018

As part of Red River College’s Flex Benefits Program, Employees in Flex Options 2, 4 or 5 may have coverage for a variety of medical services and supplies, including orthopedic shoes. Your coverage is based on your Flex Option choice.

Orthopedic Shoe Eligibility

Orthopedic shoes are covered as long as they meet the following eligibility requirements:

✓ Prescribed by a physician or podiatrist as being medically required
✓ Represent treatment that is proven effective for your diagnosed medical condition

Off the shelf orthopedic shoes which have not been modified and Orthotics are not eligible for coverage.

We recommend that you submit an estimate before purchasing orthopedic shoes to confirm coverage.

Orthopedic Shoe Claims

When submitting an estimate or a claim for Orthopedic shoes, you must include the following:

  • A prescription from a physician or podiatrist confirming the conditions being treated and a medical diagnosis
  • A lab bill, receipt, work order or invoice with:
    • Information on whether the cast used to fabricate the footwear is unique to the patient
    • Description of the process and materials used to make the shoes
    • Detailed description of the casting method and fabrication of the shoes
    • Breakdown of the cost of footwear and the date the item was dispensed

Please refer to your benefits booklet to see the maximum and coinsurance applicable to each paramedical practitioner for your Flex Option.

The above is a summary of the provisions of the group plan. In the event of a discrepancy between this benefit and the master contract, the terms of the group contract will apply.
