Diversity Training

Manitoba is composed of people from diverse cultural backgrounds, including different national or ethnic affiliations, language, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical and cognitive abilities, spiritual beliefs, marital/parental status.

The Academic Success Centre provides diversity training to students at Red River College Polytechnic to support the development of their intercultural competence and enhance their understanding and respect for gender and sexual diversity.

Intercultural Competence Training

Instructors can request workshops for their students throughout the year. A suite of intercultural workshops is available to assist students in developing the cultural awareness and skills needed to study and work successfully in today’s global environment.

This training series include:

  • Module 1: Uncovering our Cultural Lens (1 hour): Culture and Cultural Identities
  • Module 2: Navigating Cultural Differences (1 hour): Cultural Values and Misperceptions
  • Module 3: Communicating across Cultures (1 hour): Communication Styles and Misperceptions
  • Module 4: Challenging Cultural Assumptions and Bias (1 hour): Cultural Misunderstandings and Sensitivity

Gender and Sexual Diversity Training

Gender and sexual diversity workshops are also available to support students in understanding the complexity of the gender and sexual diversity spectrum and develop inclusive strategies for respectful and affirming communication.

This training series include:

  • Module 1: Understanding Gender and Sexual Diversity (1 hour): Terminology and Complex Identities
  • Module 2: Uncovering Assumptions and Barriers (1 hour): Biases and Inclusion

Diversity Awareness Online Courses

In addition to the workshops, instructors can also access three Diversity Awareness Courses in LEARN:

  • Cultural Diversity Awareness Course
  • Gender and Sexual Diversity Awareness Course
  • Disability Awareness Course

These courses feature video lectures, testimonies, learning activities, and accompanying resources. These online materials can be made available to student cohorts, and they can contribute to supporting diversity and intercultural learning outcomes in academic programs and courses.
