Four Awards of $500 each

This program is designed to provide students the opportunity to explore and develop an understanding of the many dimensions of diversity that make us unique individuals and also to connect students with others in a meaningful way that builds skills and develops an awareness and understanding of the diverse world we live in.

Four awards of $500 each are presented annually to four projects submitted by students who spend time exploring a dimension of diversity different from their own and produce a leave-behind project that promotes the dimension of diversity the student has chosen and/or benefits the organization the student was volunteering for.

Deadline for the award: March 31 at 11:59 p.m.

Application Process

All submissions will be evaluated by a panel and the successful applicants will be notified directly.

In order to apply for the SOYB Award, the student must:

  • Be a full-time student in a career program at Red River College
  • Meet the minimum requirement of 7 hours exploring a dimension of Diversity different than their own with an individual/group/organization.
  • Submit a Reflection paper, including an accurate and detailed description of their leave-behind project as well as documentation of their Project.

The following questions may be used to help guide the student’s reflection (the questions do not have to be followed exactly, they are provided as a guideline only).

  1. What was the particular dimension of Diversity you chose to explore? How is it different from your own lived experience? How did choosing this particular dimension of diversity/intersection of dimensions made you step out of your box?
  2. Describe your experience. What were your initial knowledge and assumptions about the dimension of diversity you chose to explore and how were these assumptions challenged throughout your experience?
  3. Describe your learning from this experience i.e. what you learned and how the experience impacted your learning. Were there any specific steps you too or skills you used that helped you step out of your comfort zone and grow?
  4. Describe your professional learning from this experience i.e. how this experience can inform your future practice and your career.
  5. Describe your “leave-behind” project and the thought-process that led you to create this particular project. How do you feel it benefited the individual/group/organization and/or how did you use it to promote your particular chosen dimension of diversity? What were some of the objectives that you had in mind when developing the project?
  6. Describe the benefits of working in a diverse and inclusive Canadian environment.
  7. Documentation of their leave-behind project (i.e. photos, proposal, work plan for the event, etc.).

All submissions will be evaluated by a panel and the successful applicants will be notified directly.

Students have the option to submit a joint-project together and share the award. If this is the case, the information of both students should be included on the entry form.
