The following message was sent to all Red River College faculty and staff this morning from Melanie Gudmundson, Chief Human Resources Officer:
We know that many of our students, faculty and staff will be impacted by the recent Public Health announcement for K-12 schools in Winnipeg and Brandon to move to remote learning for the next three weeks, starting May 12th until May 30th. These changes will not impact the College’s current operational response level or the delivery of our programs and services.
As Manitoba responds to the third wave of the pandemic, this is extremely stressful for all of us as we balance the health and safety of our families and our work and learning at the College. Since the start of the pandemic, our goal has been to find ways to accommodate staff, faculty and students who have been impacted by changing health requirements.
To best support you, we will use all the tools at our disposal to help the Red River College community as we navigate the third wave of the pandemic. This means that continuing to work from home and/or using other forms of approved leave to support childcare needs during this time. We recognize that flexibility will be needed to accommodate different requirements, and the College will continue to work with staff and faculty to find this balance.
If you are required to stay home to care for children whose school has moved to remote learning or for a sick family members , please work directly with your manager to discuss the appropriate plan for your specific circumstances. These situations will continue to be managed as follows:
- Work from home where appropriate
- Build flexibility in hours of work to allow for childcare responsibilities. This could include working evenings and weekends to account for the time.
- Where it is not possible to work to effectively, use family-related leave; vacation, Voluntary Reduced Work Week (VRWW); overtime; sick leave and/or other forms of approved leave. *sick leave will only apply when all other leaves, and flexible options have been explored*
All policies, procedures, and provisions in the collective agreement apply, except for a requirement to produce a doctor’s note if you are required to use sick leave.
We ask employees to work closely with their managers to establish an appropriate balance of family responsibility and work, including taking reasonable steps to share family duties with other caregivers in your family where possible and appropriate.
The situation unfolding around this wave of the pandemic continues to change to reduce the spread of infection and reduce the current pressures on our health care system. We are monitoring all developments to keep you informed, and supporting our College community as we work together to keep each other and our families safe.
There isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution for an organization as large as ours with so many factors coming to bear on all of us. We are committed to providing as many flexible options as possible to promote safety, support the RRC community and continue operating to the best of our abilities.
I want to thank all of you for your support and patience as we continue to address the ongoing changes that we’re facing. We have been here before and I know we will work together again to support each other during this time.
