Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography, also known as Echocardiography, uses high-frequency sound waves on patients to aid in cardiac diagnoses. As part of the patient care team, diagnostic cardiac sonographers assess patients and provide information to cardiologists for diagnoses and patient health monitoring.
The Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography – Echocardiography program prepares students, through theoretical and clinical training, to conduct Echocardiography examinations, focusing on the heart. This content is cross-referenced to the national competency profile set up by Sonography Canada.
This specialized profession requires a high degree of technical skills, hand-eye coordination, and exceptional interpersonal skills.

Full-time Delivery: Something New Every Term
In this program, you’ll develop the theoretical and practical skills and attain the nationally recognized credentials necessary to work as a sonographer in an echocardiography department.
TERM 1
Discover anatomy, physiology and diseases of the human heart while using the basics of ultrasound physics to operate a state-of-the-art ultrasound system.
TERM 2
Develop scanning skills to safely complete cardiac exams in preparation for assessing real patients. Broaden understanding of heart pathologies.
TERM 3
Combine scanning techniques and communication skills with patient care in an echocardiography department under the supervision of a sonographer.
TERM 4
Practice scanning techniques, departmental communication skills and patient care with increasing independence in an echocardiography department.
TERM 5
Apply echocardiography skills independently, reaching entry-level competency, in preparation for employment and a career in diagnostic echocardiography.
